Nail Clipping FAQs

Most dogs need their nails clipped every 3 to 4 weeks. If you can hear your dog's nails clicking on hard floors, they are probably too long. Dogs that walk regularly on pavement may wear their nails down naturally and need less frequent clipping.

If your dog's nails touch the ground when they are standing, they are too long. You might also hear clicking on tile or wooden floors. Overgrown nails can curve and grow into the paw pad, cause your dog to walk awkwardly and lead to joint problems over time.

When done correctly, nail clipping is not painful. We clip to a safe length, well above the quick (the blood vessel inside the nail). Some dogs may be nervous because they are not used to having their paws handled, but our gentle approach helps them stay calm.

Yes. Black nails can be trickier because you cannot see the quick, but our groomer is experienced with all nail types. We trim conservatively, taking small amounts at a time, and check the cross-section of the nail as we go to avoid cutting too short.

If a nail is accidentally cut too short and bleeds, we always have styptic powder on hand to stop the bleeding quickly. It stings briefly but is not dangerous. We take great care to avoid this, especially with black nails where the quick is harder to see.
